  • I must say, though, it is personally heartening to see Dave Lindley playing a Hora! Many of the Gold Tones available on eBay are blems. I think Gold Tone has some moderate respect here on the Cafe, too. (I don't have any real Irish bouzouki players in my vicinity to sneer at me if they were so inclined.) Trinity College gets fairly decent reviews as an entry level instrument from real players, but they are a bit higher in price. I am satisfied with the Celtic-Star as a reasonably basic instrument. So, while I suspect the Irish Red and Irish Black bouzoukis are strongly related to what I have, I don't know if they share electronics.

    The developer of the Celtic-Star intimates that he had some input as to how they were manufactured and leaves one with the impression that the pickup is not the run-of-the-mill Hora electronics.

    The built-in pickup on the Celtic-Star gives it a very nice amplified sound. I have a Celtic-Star 'made in Romania' - a strong suspicion that it's a Hora, too - that I picked up on eBay.
